Proxmox Backup Server (PBS)

A few days ago, I set up a much-needed backup solution for my Proxmox main server.

For context, here's my current rack setup, from top-to-bottom:

  • 24-port Patch Panel
  • 2.5gb 8-port switch
  • 1U Shelf (with WiFi AP on it)
  • "Family" Server (Proxmox VE)
  • Main Server (Proxmox VE)

I installed Proxmox Backup Server as a VM on the Family server.

The reason it's called the "Family" server is that it's almost entirely used for hosting my family pictures on Immich in a Debian VM.

Overall, I've been making big changes on my Main Server, which is running Proxmox, and it'd be a shame if there was a tragedy and I'm (most likely) unable to fix it.

I'm backing up all of my main server LXCs and VMs onto the "family" server (which I would now consider the "family"/backup server).

Anyways, installing PBS (Proxmox Backup Server in a VM is definitely the way to go. And especially mounting a NAS as a mount-point entry in /etc/fstab, it works as an incredibly well-integrated backup system.

Because my backups are stored on my NAS, I have a ton of storage for backups, while being easily accessible (through NFS/SMB). The storage being cleanly separated from the Proxmox Backup Server VM is definitely advantageous and a flexible option, in my very professional opinion.
